Tired of standing in the long immigration line every time you fly in or out of Korea?
If you’re a foreign resident with a valid Alien Registration Card, Korea’s Smart Entry Service (SES) auto-gate can get you through passport control in under 30 seconds.
Here’s exactly who’s eligible, including how reciprocal programs from the US, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and Germany fit in.

What Is Smart Entry Service (SES) and How Does It Work?

Smart Entry Service (SES) is Korea’s automated immigration clearance system. Instead of handing your passport to an officer for a face-to-face check, SES verifies your identity using passport information you’ve pre-registered plus biometric data, your fingerprint and a facial scan, captured right at the gate.

SES is run through Korea’s HiKorea immigration platform and exists specifically to speed up passport control for travelers who cross the border often, whether that’s a foreign resident commuting in and out of Korea, or a visitor enrolled in a partner country’s trusted-traveler program.

Where SES fits in:
Korean citizens can use SES auto-gates automatically, no registration needed. Foreign residents and reciprocal program members must pre-register first. That’s what the rest of this guide covers. If you want the bigger picture of what happens at the airport beyond the auto-gate itself, arrival cards, customs, Q-Code, see our Immigration and Customs guide.

Who Is Eligible to Register for SES as a Foreign Resident?

You’re eligible to register for SES as a foreign resident if you’re 17 years old or older and hold a valid Alien Registration Card (ARC) or domestic residence card issued by Korean immigration authorities.

  • Age 17 or older on the date you register
  • Hold a valid ARC (외국인등록증), or a domestic residence card if you’re an overseas Korean national residing in Korea
  • The passport you register with must still be valid

Unlike Korean citizens, who can walk up to an SES auto-gate without ever pre-registering, foreign residents must complete registration in advance, typically in person, with your passport and ARC on hand, before you can use the gate for the first time.

Good to know:
SES registration is separate from your ARC application itself. Holding a valid ARC makes you eligible, but you still need to actively register for SES before the auto-gate will recognize you.

Reciprocal SES Programs for International Travelers

Beyond resident-based registration, Korea also runs bilateral reciprocal SES agreements with five countries and regions, meaning travelers already enrolled in certain overseas trusted-traveler programs may be able to use Korea’s auto-gates too, and Korean SES members may get reciprocal benefits abroad.

If you’re already a member of one of these partner programs, don’t assume you’re automatically covered in Korea. Reciprocal terms, registration steps, and eligibility rules are set independently by each program’s administering agency (for example, U.S. Customs and Border Protection for Global Entry). Confirm your specific eligibility with your home program and cross-check the official HiKorea SES page before your trip.

If you’re a visitor rather than a resident and you’re still sorting out basic entry requirements before you book your flight, start with our Do I Need a Visa or K-ETA to Enter Korea? guide. SES eligibility comes after that, not instead of it.

How Long Is SES Registration Valid, and When Do You Need to Re-Register?

Once you register, your SES access stays valid until whichever comes first: your permitted stay in Korea expires, or the passport you registered with expires.

If either one changes, say, you renew your passport or extend your visa, your existing SES registration doesn’t automatically update itself in the background.

Renewed your passport?
You must visit an immigration office in person to re-link your new passport to your SES registration before you can use the auto-gate again. Skipping this step means the gate simply won’t recognize you on your next trip.

FAQ: SES Eligibility Questions Answered

Who is eligible for SES as a foreign resident in Korea?

Foreign residents aged 17 or older who hold a valid Alien Registration Card (ARC) or domestic residence card are eligible to register for Korea’s Smart Entry Service (SES) auto-gates. You must complete registration in person before your first use, SES access isn’t automatic the way it is for Korean citizens.

Do I need to pre-register before using an SES auto-gate?

Yes, if you’re a foreign resident. Korean citizens can use SES gates without pre-registering, but foreign residents must register their passport and biometric data with immigration in advance.

Can tourists or short-term visitors use SES, or is it only for residents?

Resident-based SES registration is designed for foreign nationals actually residing in Korea with an ARC. However, visitors who are already members of a partner reciprocal program, such as US Global Entry, Hong Kong’s e-Channel, Macau’s SES-APC, Taiwan’s SES-e-Gate, or Germany’s EasyPASS, may be eligible for expedited clearance in Korea under the bilateral agreement. Check with your home program and HiKorea for the current terms.

What happens to my SES registration if my passport is renewed?

Your SES access is tied to the exact passport you registered with, and it expires along with that passport (or your permitted stay, whichever comes first). After renewing your passport, you’ll need to visit an immigration office in person to re-link your new passport before the auto-gate will work again.

Which countries and regions have reciprocal SES agreements with Korea?

As of the latest HiKorea information, Korea has bilateral reciprocal SES programs with the United States (Global Entry / SES-GE), Hong Kong (e-Channel), Macau (SES-APC), Taiwan (SES-e-Gate), and Germany (EasyPASS).

Is there a fee to register for SES?

The official HiKorea SES page doesn’t list a separate application fee for resident registration. You’ll simply need your passport and ARC on hand when you register in person. Since program details can be updated, it’s worth confirming the latest information on the official HiKorea site before you go.

Where can I register for SES in Korea?

Registration is available at Incheon International Airport, Gimpo International Airport, and other designated immigration offices and international airports across the country. The current full list of registration centers and participating airports is maintained on HiKorea’s official SES pages, since locations are periodically added.

Is SES the same thing as K-ETA or a Korean visa?

No. K-ETA and visas are entry authorizations you need before you’re allowed to travel to Korea at all. SES is a separate, optional convenience system that speeds up the physical passport-control line for travelers who register in advance. It doesn’t replace the need for a valid visa, K-ETA, or ARC. For entry requirements themselves, see our Do I Need a Visa or K-ETA to Enter Korea? guide.
